The Association of Women Mathematicians Uganda (AWoM), in collaboration with Busitema University, successfully organized the “Run4Math8” marathon at Tororo Girls’ School sports ground on Saturday, 15th March 2025. This event, held under the theme “Mathematics, Art, and Creativity,” was a celebration of the role mathematics plays in everyday life, particularly in fostering innovation and artistic expression.
Promoting Mathematics Among Girls
AWoM has been at the forefront of promoting quality mathematics education in Uganda, with a particular focus on empowering girls. Since 2018, the association has actively organized activities in honor of the International Day of Mathematics (IDM), a UNESCO-declared global event aimed at enhancing appreciation for mathematics worldwide. This year’s marathon added an exciting and interactive dimension to these efforts, drawing students, teachers, and stakeholders from various institutions.

Busitema University’s Commitment to Science Education
Busitema University, a key partner in the event, has consistently championed science education for girls. The institution has spearheaded initiatives such as the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Symposium, the Sports Gender Round Table, and numerous programs aimed at eliminating barriers to girls’ participation in science fields. Their involvement in the Math Run reaffirmed their dedication to bridging the gender gap in STEM education.

A Day of Energy and Inspiration
The marathon witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, teachers, and community members, all rallying behind the cause of making mathematics engaging and accessible. The event was more than just a race; it was a symbol of determination, discipline, and the interconnectedness of mathematics and everyday activities. Dr. Agnes Baluka Masajja, the Deputy Chief Sports for Busitema University, played a crucial role by providing technical support for the run and ensuring that the marching segments were well-coordinated.
Impact and Future Prospects
Beyond the physical exercise, the Math Run served as a powerful reminder that mathematics is not confined to classrooms and textbooks but is a dynamic and creative discipline. The event inspired students to approach mathematics with curiosity and confidence, breaking the stereotype that it is a difficult or rigid subject. Given the success of this marathon, stakeholders hope to make it an annual event, further strengthening the role of mathematics in shaping Uganda’s future innovators.
With continued collaboration between institutions like AWoM, Busitema University, and Tororo Girls’ School, the journey to empowering young girls in mathematics and STEM at large remains promising. The Run4Math8 marathon was not just a race; it was a step towards a brighter, mathematically empowered future.
