WORLD AIDS DAY AT TORORO GIRLS’ SCHOOL
Theme: Standing Strong Against HIV/AIDS
World AIDS Day at Tororo Girls’ School was more than a date on the calendar. It was a moment to learn, reflect, and recommit to protecting our community. Under the theme Standing Strong Against HIV/AIDS, students and staff came together with a shared purpose: to strengthen awareness, encourage responsible choices, and support those affected by the epidemic.
The day opened with a short assembly led by the Health Prefects, who reminded the school that HIV remains a real challenge, especially for young people across Africa. They highlighted the progress Uganda has made over the years—from expanding access to treatment to reducing new infections—but also noted how much work is still ahead. Their message was clear: knowledge and discipline save lives.
Students later attended guided group discussions facilitated by the school nurse and invited health workers from Tororo Main Hospital. These sessions helped break down myths that still surround HIV. Many learners were surprised to learn how effective modern treatment can be, and how early testing allows people to live long, healthy lives. The health workers encouraged students to speak up, ask questions, and take charge of their well-being.
The peer educators also played a key role. Their skits and poems used simple stories to show the realities of stigma, temptation, and peer pressure. They reminded the school that real strength lies in making smart choices, supporting friends who are struggling, and rejecting harmful stereotypes. The performances carried a gentle but firm message: respect and compassion must guide the way we deal with HIV.
Throughout the day, the school campus displayed student-made posters with facts about prevention, testing, and healthy living. These creative works sparked conversations among classmates and helped turn the entire school into an open learning space. It was encouraging to see learners take ownership of the theme and express their voices in meaningful ways.
The event closed with a pledge led by the Deputy Head Teacher. Students committed themselves to responsible behaviour, regular health check-ups, and standing against discrimination. As she noted, education remains one of the strongest tools in the fight against HIV. When young people are informed, confident, and supported, the whole community becomes safer.
World AIDS Day at Tororo Girls’ School served as a reminder that the battle is not yet over, but together we can make a difference. By choosing to stand strong—through knowledge, empathy, and discipline—our school continues to play its part in building a healthier future for all.
